Babu is a native of Chittagong
Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was born on May 01, 1945. He was born and brought up in Chittagong. He was associated with a wealthy aristocratic Muslim family. His Father, Nuruzzaman Chowdhury, was an advocate and a landlord of Anwara Haildhor in Chittagong. Although he belonged to a prestigious family, he was always humble and down to earth. Under his reign, he always worked for substantial development as he developed various parts of Chittagong City. This might be the reason why the people of Chittagong still remember and love him.
Akhtaruzzaman was a Freedom Fighter in the War of Liberation
In 1970, Babu organized “Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra” in Chittagong. He was also elected as Provincial Assembly for East Pakistan from Anwara-West Patia during the war. As a Bangladesh Delegate, he performed various responsibilities during the war. He traveled to India and different parts of The United States and Europe and accumulated the help needed in the war. So Babu not only fought in the war but helped Bangladesh in every way he could to achieve victory.

Babu is not only known for being a fantastic leader but an established businessman. He established one of his first businesses, a factory called Boyle Industry, before independence. Many of his other notable ventures include Afroza Oil Mill, Asif Steel Mill, Asif Synthetic, Javed Steel Mill and many more. He played a significant role in organizing the private banking sector in Bangladesh. Babu found the Zaman Industrial Group, one of the well-known business organizations in the country, in the ’80s. He is also the founder of Aramit Group and the founding chairman of the second private bank in Bangladesh, United Commercial Bank Limited. Akhtaruzzaman made the United Commercial Bank one of the most successful banks in Bangladesh. He played a significant role in the improvement of the baking and finance sector in Bangladesh.
